What’s Trending in 2022? Home Exteriors, Garage Doors, and More

When the pandemic sent everyone home, people started to notice their homes with a different perspective. They started to re-envision the “home sweet home” they thought they had and rethink their design to fit new needs and interests. If we’re stuck at home, we might as well enjoy our space to the fullest, right?

“Feeling good at home has become a priority, so why not renovate or remodel in order to have everything under the same roof?” – Sarah, owner of Real Architecture.

What’s your (architectural) style?

Knowing trends and popular designs can help you improve any renovation or new construction project. The trends surrounding home exteriors change all the time, but there are four architectural styles that you should understand to help you make the right decisions about your design.

The Transitional Style

2 story Transitional / Modern Farmhouse / Scandinavian style house plan, 2 single garage doors, in Flush design and Black colour

This Transitional Style house plan courtesy of Anne Paquet Design fits perfectly with our Flush design garage doors in Black.

“Homeowners are moving away from a precise style. What they want is a timeless property that will stay elegant and beautiful over time.” – Ashley, at Anne Paquet Design.

The Transitional Style offers an exterior that will stay in style despite the changing times. Often also called classic modern, it’s a cross between traditional and modern architecture and it’s all about simplicity.

There are clean, symmetrical lines and natural shades of browns, whites, and grays along with stylish white oak that is also simple and yet so elegant in a classic way.

Transitional homes will look great with the Flush or Moderno 2 beads designs when in need of a timeless complement.

The Modern Style

From Anne Paquet Design, this modern style house fits beautifully with these California full-view garage doors. From the matching black frame to the privacy-enhanced sandblasted glass for natural light, these doors offer the best of style and privacy.

Square houses are out and more complex designs are in. It’s trendy to mix spaces and proportions, create asymmetrical features, and play with depth and height to create energy and character. No one wants to live in a “box” these days.

As you’d expect, Modern Style most commonly incorporates whites, blacks, and grays. Plus, you can remove some of the coldness by adding stone accents or warm blonde woods. Then, you’ve got those large, beautiful windows that just keep adding to the WOW factor and creating the perfect home design.

Into premium exclusive looks? You’ll love the Vog garage door, a Garaga exclusive. And to complement it perfectly, try Novatech’s entry door that features the same design.

If modern is what you seek, the Vog, Moderno multi or Grooved designs are the most deserving choices. When you want your garage to get noticed (for the right reasons), these collections offer stunning style in Charcoal, Black, and Iron Or Walnut (a mixture of walnut-looking designs with a deep gray colour), giving you the perfect sleek finish that will stand out.

The Farmhouse & Modern Farmhouse Styles

The farmhouse collection is in, both in the rustic and modern versions, and designers say that the trend is here to stay!

Love contrasting Black and White? Try this Modern Farmhouse Style house plan created by Plan Image # 22001. The lighting adds flair while the wood warms the entire look, creating the perfect blend of classic farmhouse style and modern tastes. The final touch is the double garage door with the Cambridge CM design, which is part of the Townships Collection.

It doesn’t matter whether you go rustic or modern; farmhouse style is definitely the most popular right now and will continue to thrive throughout 2022. Neutral colours ensure that the modern architectural details stand out, while the traditional farmhouse elements complement that look nicely. It’s essentially a great mix of modern, country, and even (surprisingly, to some) Scandinavian styles.

The Scandinavian Style

Scandinavian Style house plan. Its blond wood contrasting with black windows and front door, as well as the gable and beams over the entry door, which echo the triangular window and the slope of the roof.

Take a look at this classic Scandinavian Style house plan from Real Architecture’s Sarah Moore. The impressive beams and gables draw your eye in while the black windows and door contrast the beautiful blonde wood. The roof slope and triangular window echo the beam designs, and the traditional “less is more” look that Scandinavian design is known for is showcased in the sleek, simple garage door design.

The look ends up creating an inviting, relaxing atmosphere. Thanks to the gabled roof, many might mistake it for a spa or even a quaint, modern cottage.

If you want something that coordinates with the Scandinavian style, check out our California, Cambridge CL, Shaker-Modern XL or Flush garage door models to find the one that you like best. Many unfinished materials are used in this type of design, with nature accents dominating. Light colours, warm tones, and unique architectural lines are what make this style stand out. With a black or charcoal garage door, you’ll create the perfect modern Scandinavian look.

Popular materials and colours for all these 4 home styles

The best way to create style and charm in your home is to mix raw materials. You can find tons of different options for exterior coverings and the majority of them are naturally soft, neutral colours that will add character and complement the rest of the design to eliminate the monotony.

Choose brick, stone, vinyl, or cedar shingles if you want to play with textures and make your home stand out. Stick with neutral, warm colours and stay away from yellows, blues, etc. for your exterior colours. When you choose a subtle exterior siding, you will be able to accentuate it to complete your design, no matter what style you prefer.

Fiber cement planks and panels add a unique touch. These are typically found in Scandinavian and Farmhouse designs, and they are ideal for resisting shock and humidity in addition to adding a unique finish to your home.

Add a touch of richness with wood inserts. These can be used on dormers, gables, and other parts of the home to create warmth and unique style. Modern arches made of blonde woods add to the natural Scandinavian look, too.

If you’ve got style down, it’s time to think about substance. In the case of garage doors, that means insulation. Here’s what you need to know.

You’ll always fare better with a well-insulated door, but it’s a must if your garage is attached to the house. If it’s under or beside a bedroom or living room, you’ll want to make sure that you have the right insulation. Otherwise, you’ll be throwing money out the door, quite literally, trying to keep the home a comfortable temperature.

The Princeton P-12, 9' x 8', Iron Ore Walnut garage doors and Ice White overlays, 8-pane Panoramic windows really enhance this Craftman home while providing R-16 insulation.

Princeton P-12 doors are great because they lend so much charm to this home without stealing the spotlight. They offer premium R-16 insulation and with the Panoramic windows, natural light pours in so that you can use the inside of the garage as you please. (In this image, you see the doors in Ore Walnut with Ice White overlays. Doors also come in all black or all white.)

When you choose a higher the R-value, your garage door will be better insulated to keep out cold and heat. This is the 4th wall of your space, after all, and needs to be thought of as such.

Garaga garage doors are proudly constructed right here in Canada and made to handle all types of temperature differences, prevent outdoor airflow from getting in, and so much more. With premium seals, joints, and construction, you can trust these doors.

This small California all-glass garage door brings a lot of light into the all white office of this lady from Montreal, Canada.

Take a look at this Montreal homeowner’s design. She knew full-view doors offered less insulation, but she still went with the California style garage door for the home office because it brings in so much natural light and helps her plants thrive.

Falling fast for the beauty of panoramic, all-glass doors like the California? Of course you are—they’re stunning!

You’ll be happy to know that they’re also constructed from a great thermal conductor, durable aluminum. California doors may not have the same insulation level as all-steel doors that are insulated with polyurethane foam. However, they do have plenty of their own insulation and they are corrosion-resistant. Plus, they create beautiful spaces and bring in plenty of natural light. So, what do you think? Will you go ahead with the California door anyway?
